Inaugural Season Wrap Up

League Director’s Note

How do you spell SUCCESS?!?! It’s not in the ridership, or the amount of money we tucked away for next season….SUCCESS is the number of lives we’ve touched, how many new friends were made, and all of the new families that are now riding bikes because of WVICL.

We saw it all this season…excessive rains, stifling heat, cold temps, and MUD! The challenges we faced race after race proved to me that our team has what it takes! WVICL has a large base of dedicated volunteers, coaches, athletes, and parents that have the same dream. Living this dream, we all took part in making history, and we put WV on the NICA map. I’m thrilled with the outcome of our first season, and can’t wait to start planning for next year.

I hope you all know how much I appreciate YOU!!

Full of Gratitude!
Cassie Smith

Final Race Report & Season Wrap up

North Bend State Park proved to be an amazing venue, and the new course that was constructed just for our NICA athletes was one of a kind! The twisty turns and trails that flowed brought smiles for miles, as each athlete took on Defend the Bend. You can find all results here:

Race # 3 North Bend Results | Final Overall Standings | Final Team Standings.

Not only did everyone leave North Bend feeling great, they looked great too! Check out amazing event photos here, Pictures, courtesy of Kyle Mandler. Thanks Kyle!

We’ve had a great season, thank you for being involved! You’re now entering the off-season and we hope you get a lot of rest.

Throughout the year you’ve learned a lot about managing the inherent risk involved in mountain biking from your team. Managing your own riding risk over the off-season will be fun and following the points below will help you to help reduce injury potential and increase the likelihood of FUN.

Always let people know your ride plan and get permission from you parents including:
When, where, plan if you don’t return on time

Ride with Respect
Do what your coach taught you
Ride with proper equipment
Ride with a friend
Ride within your ability
Keep in mind appropriate and legal trails
Consider taking a Wilderness First Aid class. You will be glad you did!

Remember parents are the biggest sponsor and be sure to “Stoke them out” too.

Please refer to the NICA team training limits and NICA insurance FAQ. During the off season, your children are not insured through NICA in any capacity. Lastly, your daughter or son’s bike has been well-used this season. If you haven’t been to a local bike shop recently, we recommend you bring it by one to make sure it will continue to run well for the coming months.

Finally, the WVICL staff would like to offer a generous THANK YOU to each and every parent, student, coach, sponsor and volunteer for making WVICL’s first season a success. We have so much more planned for next year and cannot wait to share! If you want to get more involved, we are always looking to expand our team – just drop us a line here:

2019 Leaders’ Summit

WVICL is deep into planning for 2019! Please keep an eye out for final information for the 2019 Leaders’ Summit. The Leaders’ Summit is an integral part of the NICA model for developing mentors and coaches. The two-day program offers extensive leadership and coaching programing, as well as on-the-bike skills training. If you are interested in coaching, starting a mountain bike team, or getting more involved with the State organization, Summit attendance is critical! Returning coaches will be offered advanced training, advice and tools to take their teams to the next level, a requirement to achieve Level 3 coaching status. The 2019 Summit will again be hosted by North Bend State Park on March 2-3. Save the date!!

2019 Race Venues

As we expand, the WVICL core team will be assessing new venues for inclusion in the fall 2019 race season and beyond. We are always on the lookout for potential partners and land managers interested in getting more kids on bikes. We plan to begin new race venues surveys soon, with venue finalization and announcements to be made at the 2019 Leaders’ Summit. Please feel free to reach out if you have any venue suggestions, and contact

2019 New Teams

Now is the time to start thinking about starting a team in your community. You don’t have to be an expert mountain biker to become a coach – as long as you bring enthusiasm and commitment to the table, we will take care of the rest. To find out more, contact

People for Bikes Survey

Did you head out to a NICA race this past season? If you did – we need your help! We’re collecting data with support from about the economic impact our races have on their local communities. To do this successfully, we need you to complete a short survey after each of your races this fall! I know we are late to the game on getting this out, but if you would take a few minutes to take the survey, it could possibly help us get financial support from the areas effected. Thanks in advance!

The survey can be accessed HERE

We are always looking for new organizations that would be willing to step up as league sponsors. We provide our sponsors with premium exposure to West Virginia’s active youths and their families, and our sponsors love to help us introduce today’s youth to an active lifestyle, and the lifelong sport of cycling. If your interested in supporting our cause in 2019, please contact

A very Special Thank You to our 2018 Sponsors
