The West Virginia Interscholastic Cycling League is now an official NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) Project League. The league has completed required trainings and benchmarks and are moving forward toward launching their inaugural race season this coming fall. As part of this, the West Virginia League just held their first Leaders Summit at North Bend State Park. With over 30 attendees, the Leaders’ Summit provided top notch training for the league’s coaches and volunteers. “The WV Leaders’ Summit was a great experience, for everyone!” states West Virginia League Director, Cassie Smith. “ Potential coaches from all over the state came together, to develop skills, and get the knowledge needed to establish teams. WV coaches were not only educated, but they were inspired to change lives. ”
Zoe Morris attended the inaugural summit and states, “The Leader’s Summit was an amazing reminder of the experience and passion in the West Virginia mountain bike scene. I’m nervous but excited to ride with kiddos in my hometown and share with them experiences and space for growth. For me, on a bike and in the woods is the perfect place for that. ”
Lauren Duensing, NICA VP of Programs, traveled to present at the summit from California; “West Virginia League has passionate leadership and coaches equipped and ready to launch interscholastic cycling in their state. The West Virginia League is rolling and set to have a great inaugural coaching season and set of races. ”
WV coaches will spend the rest of this Spring developing a mountain biking club in their local high school or community. Spring will include pre-season activities and the first race series will take place this Fall. The race series is as follows: Race 1-September 8-9 – Battle at Big Bear – Big Bear Lake Camplands, Race 2- September 22-23 Challenge at Little Creek City Park, Race 3- October 7-8 Watter Smith State Park, Race 4 – October 20, 21 – North Bend State Park.
